K-Ci & JoJo - Tell Me It's Real (D.J Luck & M.C Neat Mix)
It was a January evening during a Music Conference week in Cannes, France where there was a choice of parties to goto as the invites just kept coming, when a 'cheeky' couple of drinks later I ended up in a 'free' party where 'anyone who was anyone' was there ( Still not sure why they let me in. lol) and Andy Hunter was special guest DJ on behalf of Microsoft. I'm not normally one to abuse the free bar opportunity but this night was an exception. Andy's time on the decks really set me off one one..... like dancing with strangers, dancing on the stage thinking I'm all that, talking really loudly and partying like i was having the time of my life. His set lifted the room and set an ambience that couldnt be dismissed. This guy was a real buzz ! The Jack Daniels kept flowing and later that night led me to waking my hotel neighbours, phoning my partner at 4am and falling asleep in my clothes. Typical Swansea girl, eh?
The next day I met Andy and we had a bit of a chat for a while. There he was, one of the best DJs I've ever heard! ( and I've heard and met some of the World's finest), me hungover as hell (and stinking of Jack Daniels - even though I'd showered and brushed my teeth 3 times) and he was this humble, down to earth guy - who really had the World at his feet. Andy has recording Deal with Major Record Company, is a spokesperson for Microsoft , a DJ at Midem Music Conference and a very fine music producer. And guess what he lives in Swansea - I couldn't believe it! From talking with him then, and I've also met up with him a few other times since, I can truly say that I couldn't think of anyone who could inspire young people to live their dream more. He's a regular type of guy with so many special qualities, yet so humble.
I know that Andy has gained more and more popularity, however he's probably the most under-stated DJ in the UK and doesn't get the true recognition that he deserves, in particular in Wales. Everyone should know of DJ Andy Hunter. It's not just about Andy's DJn -Its the messages that he takes with him everywhere he goes. If you get the chance to talk with Andy, if not about his career, have a general chit chat with him. He's inspiring :) If you get the chance to watch him play - GO You won't be dissapointed....Just make sure there's no free bar !
So there was this event over the weekend.... don't know if you've heard about it, what with all the rocks to hide under and all, but here's what happened: in a small seaside city in Wales, in an unassuming, grey looking building, a long established clubbing brand decided it was time for a change. And you know what? It went RIGHT OFF!
Of course I'm talking about the grand opening party at Escape's new home on the Kingsway. If you were there, you know what I'm on about. Everyone else will no doubt hear about it as word spreads because, and I know I'm biased, I honestly think we've got ourselves one of the best clubs in the country (not just Wales, but the UK) and potentially something world class. It's a fantastic venue that frankly was wasted before we showed up, and it's such a massive contrast to what we had as - let's be honest here - the old place was a bit of a dive.
From my point of view I couldn't be happier. Over the years I've seen the lighting and visuals set-up in Escape dwindle from OK to 'meh' as things have broken and not been replaced. As a VJ and lampy it was disheartening to say the least: bit by bit my job was being taken away from me and by the end all I could do was turn things on and pray it was still working come the end of the night.
How things change! Now I have lights and smoke and screens and the awesome LED wall, and at last I can actually do the things I love to do, and hopefully get back on track to carving a name out for myself (it's not all about the DJs you know). We're not done yet: we need to tweak some things (the smoke springs straight to mind) and I reckon a few more lights and big screens are in order to round things off, but we are tantalisingly close to clubbing nirvana. Look, just there - can't you smell it?
I'll leave you with something that I just remembered while typing away. Years ago, when the whole visuals side of things was gearing up we made a resolution to campaign for a 'best visuals' category in the clubbing awards. Things changed then and it turned into nothing but a pipe dream. Now we're back, we're bigger and better than ever, and just maybe the time is now.
Peace.
